Reports have been emailed to all parents and carers. The conversation at home with your student about the reports and what the results reflect are an important step in the learning process for all. Please remember, in term 3, reports are a precursor to our scheduled parent and teacher interviews. The parent communication and involvement in school academics with teachers is a strong supportive factor for improvement of your student’s future achievement. Book in and come along where you can to support your student’s learning improvement journey.
The start of this term has been very tragic for our school. As per my previous communications, losing one of our own Wynnum SHS family is a deeply devastating occurrence. I want to thank all parents and carers for your supportive response to the family at the centre of the tragedy, but also to those impacted here at Wynnum SHS. I want to thank you all for the conversations and support you have provided your students and their peers at this difficult time. As always, we maintain opportunities here at school for students to access our Guidance Team and our Chaplaincy services. Please encourage your students to reach out should you feel it necessary. In time, and in respect and cooperation with the family, we will find the ways to celebrate and remember Declan here at school. I am always impressed by how schools such as ours, specifically young people, their teachers and parents, can all band together to support each other in such difficult times.

At Wynnum State High School, we are committed to supporting our students in planning for their future. As part of this commitment, all Year 10 students will participate in a compulsory Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan interview on Thursday 14 August.
Over Terms 2 and 3, students have been working through our PROUD Pathways program, where they have explored career options, developed personal goals, and considered their senior subject choices. The SET Plan process is a vital step in ensuring that every student makes informed decisions about their future learning and career path.
SET Plan interviews will be held throughout the day on Thursday 14 August, from 7:30am to 5:00pm. Year 10 students will not attend regular classes on this day but are instead required to attend their 30-minute interview with a parent or carer.
Parents and carers will be able to book interview times from Tuesday 5 August via Compass, using the same system as Parent-Teacher Interviews. Full booking instructions will be sent via email.
To attend the interview, students must have completed the following tabs on OneSchool:
- My Intended Pathway
- My Pathway Portfolio
- My Course of Study
- Learning Progress
Students will also need to bring their completed My Pathway document they have completed during PROUD Pathways lessons.
We encourage all families to engage in conversations with their child about these elements of planning on OneSchool. It’s a valuable opportunity to reflect on goals and discuss future aspirations.
If you are unable to attend on the scheduled day, please contact the school to arrange an alternative time.

Athletics Carnival
Our annual School Athletics Carnival was a fantastic day filled with energy, enthusiasm and incredible sportsmanship. Students from all year levels gave it their all, competing across track and field events with determination and team spirit. The cheering from the sidelines was a thing to behold, creating an uplifting atmosphere for all involved.
A huge congratulations to Oxley House, who took out the top spot this year with the highest overall points, well done. We also celebrate all our age champions and participants who gave it their all, making the day a true showcase of athleticism and WSHS community spirit.
Thank you to our staff and families for your support in making the carnival such a memorable success.

UQ Ancient History Experience Day
Year 10, 11, and 12 Ancient History students from Wynnum State High School had a fantastic time at the UQ Ancient History Experience Day, immersing themselves in the daily life, artifacts, and languages of Ancient Greece and Rome. From deciphering Latin inscriptions to examining real archaeological objects, the students finished the day inspired, curious and buzzing with historical insight.
Movie World
Our Year 11 Business and Tourism students had a great day of learning and fun at Movie World recently. Movie World staff delivered a very informative and interesting presentation about marketing. Students then had time to explore the venue to see how their classroom learning applies to a real-life tourist attraction.

Our Year 11 Ancient History class studied a unit on Vikings. Mrs Warfield decided to increase student engagement and collaboration by gamifying the unit by attaching the development of skills with unique rewards (based on an existing Vikings card game). The idea was to have students collaborate in groups (or clans), gather resources by completing tasks and work together towards common goals. Clans were able to trade their resources with other clans to improve their overall clan rating. A survey of students at the end of the unit showed over 80% of students agreed the gamification activities improved their engagement, other student’s engagement and that they were motivated to collect cards and trade with others. 73% of students stated the activities helped their motivation to develop the skills needed to complete their assessment. Over 90% of students stated the activities helped them to better understand Viking clan life.

In Year 7 Science and Math, Mr Macauley was interested in using ClassPoint, an add on to Microsoft Powerpoint. ClassPoint allows teachers to gamify quizzes on Powerpoint and give students timely feedback. He was also interested in testing whether pre-testing students was beneficial in learning. Upon completion of the units of work students were asked their opinion via survey. Over 80% of students found their learning was more engaging when using Classpoint and would like it used again. Over 90% of students liked the immediate feedback on questions and around 70% of students believed it helped their learning. End of lesson quizzes were dramatically improved if students were given a pretest at the start of the lesson with the average result increasing by 25%. Mr Macauley is working with another teacher this semester with the intention of comparing data to verify if the above corresponds with improved student results in exams.
We would like to take the opportunity to thank these teachers for their work and dedication to finding new ways to improve student outcomes. In the next newsletter we will cover two other interesting projects done by our amazing teachers here at Wynnum State High School.

Public Speaking Competition
The speakers showed many strengths both in writing and presenting – using humour, anecdote, facts, and strong performances. Eve’s speech was thought provoking and her delivery – all memorised – was seamless. The adjudicator appreciated the insightful and humorous analogy Eve provided about life as a swimming race – and everyone making a choice on their swimming style – from freestyle to dog paddle.
Congratulations Eve! The finals round will be held in August.

Rugby 7s National Championships
While the team will not tour, Madison has been invited to a national training camp in Northern NSW in September as a member of the Australian team.
This is a fantastic achievement, and we wish Madison all the best in her future sporting endeavours.
Headspace Art Expo 29th June, Redlands Museum
The Headspace Art Expo was held on June 29th at the Redlands Museum, showcasing a diverse range of artworks created in Semester 1 by high-achieving Visual Art students from all year levels. Among the exhibitors were Year 8 sisters Sophie and Rowan, who both displayed and successfully sold their original pieces.
A highlight of the event was Year 9 student Alexandra P's artwork Suspended Realities, which earned the YPAC Choice Award—an honor presented by the Headspace Capalaba Young Person Advisory Committee. In addition to her award, Alexandra’s piece was also purchased by a member of the public. Other artworks sold included Muse by Rowan and Drumstick Icecream by Sophie.

Bridge 2 Brisbane - Running for Chappy Greg
For over 20 years, Chappy Greg has supported generations of students with kindness, encouragement, and a listening ear. From muddy Year 7 camps to snowy ski trips, he’s always first to volunteer — driving buses, setting up sports carnivals, or simply showing up when needed.
At school, he brings energy and fun every day — running handball games, leading 'Taco, Cat, Goat, Cheese, Pizza,' and creating a safe space for connection. He’s also up early each week for Breakfast Club, making sure students start their day with a smile (and a full belly!).
This year, one of our school parents is running the 10km Bridge to Brisbane and fundraising for Chappy Greg, aiming to raise $1,000. If you'd like to support them—and Chappy Greg—you can donate via the link below.
