School Communication

We are committed to open, respectful, and positive communication with parents and carers, as a vital part of supporting your child's learning, wellbeing and development.

To strengthen partnerships with families, we continue to celebrate student achievements, share learning progress, respond promptly to important concerns, communicate absences, manage consent and payments, provide regular school updates, and invite your feedback and involvement.

To support positive communication between schools and families, a new resource has been developed by the department that outlines shared expectations around what, how, and when schools and families communicate. This resource is designed to help foster mutual understanding and proactive collaboration.

James Nottingham Visit to Wynnum SHS

James.jpg

James Nottingham is an educational leader, with a passion in transforming research into strategies that work in classrooms. He is still a practicing teacher in the UK and is regarded by many as one of the most engaging, thought-provoking and inspirational speakers in education.

A group of passionate teachers at Wynnum SHS have been engaging with his book “Teach Brilliantly” as part of our Whole School Approach to pedagogy. James visited Wynnum during the January student free days where he engage all staff in a full day PD around some of the teaching strategies in his book.

Last week, we were lucky enough to host him back at Wynnum SHS. During his afternoon at the here he taught a demo lesson to one of our Year 9 classes. This lesson was watched by a large group of teachers who got to see some of his strategies in practice, in our context, with our students. Such a valuable PD and learning opportunity it was.

Key messages from his PD were around discussing his 7 steps to strong learning:

  1. Engage students in learning
  2. Cause thinking
  3. Check understanding/capability
  4. Adapt
  5. Demonstrate learning/progress
  6. Assess (formal process to knowing student progress)
  7. Strengthen memory gains

Staff will continue to explore and implement ‘Teach Brilliantly’ strategies as we are committed to refining our craft to be the best possible teachers for our students here at Wynnum.

House Choir

On Tuesday 6 May, we held our inaugural House Choir competition and it was amazing to see our students getting involved and sharing their talents.

Congratulations to Kennedy House for taking 1st place with an enthusiastic rendition of "Umbrella".

Special mention to our other House performances:

2nd: Mitchell with "Sweet Caroline"

3rd: Cunningham with "Blue"

4th: Oxley with "We Will Rock You"

You all rocked it - what a way to kick off this new tradition!

A big thank you to our school judges Peter, Larry, Jo and Greg, and to our special guest judge Leanne from Soul Song Community Choirs, for their time.

Homestay Program for Japanese Students
